AJ Scorey - Fractional CMO

Your marketing needs a leader, not more hands.

Senior marketing leadership, part-time. I set the direction, build the team and the tech stack, and make sure the work gets done well - by the right people, at the right cost.

Who you get

I've spent 15+ years building and leading marketing functions - from Series A start-ups to FranklinCovey across Europe, with teams of 15+ and budgets to match. I've run a publishing P&L and stepped in as fractional MD of a £9m+ business. I'm happiest where technology is reshaping an industry and the story really matters.

Where I add value: thinking, not making

I do

  • Strategy and positioning
  • Marketing plans and budgets
  • Tech stack and martech choices
  • Hiring, building and coaching your team
  • Managing agencies and freelancers
  • Leadership-level thinking, at the top table

I don't usually

  • Make your ads
  • Edit your videos
  • Run your social channels day to day

I can, and I genuinely love creating content - I started out as a journalist, after all. But having a senior leader make your ads is rarely the best use of your budget. I'll find the right people, brief them properly and hold them to a high standard - and I'll know good work when I see it, because I've done it myself.

Where I'm happiest

At the start and the turn - launches, scale-ups, rebuilds and inherited messes. Building the thing is where I add the most.

How I work

I'm a storyteller at heart - I started out as a journalist and editor, so I look for the story in every business and make sure it gets told properly. I'm also a doer: I like to get moving, keep momentum and begin with the end in mind - the outcome is what counts. Not everything lands first time, so we fail forward, learn fast and keep going. I'm transparent about what's working and what isn't, and I bring energy and a sense of fun to the room. Above all, I'm deeply collaborative - the best work happens with your team, not to it. Expect honest opinions and fresh ideas, worked through together.

We'll get on if...

  • Technology and innovation are at the heart of what you're building - and the story really matters
  • You value transparency - straight answers, open numbers, no hidden agendas
  • You move at pace and want someone who'll keep up
  • You want to try new things, fail fast and learn faster - not wait for the perfect plan
  • You believe that if you can't count it, you should question why you're doing it
  • You'd rather be authentic than polished
  • You believe work should be fun - and that a brand needs real personality

Ways to work together

Diagnostic

A paid deep-dive into your marketing, numbers and team. You leave with a clear diagnosis, a baseline and the one or two measures that will define success.

Strategy Sprint

A clear plan for one big thing - positioning, a launch, go-to-market or your tech stack. Your team or agency delivers; I make sure it's right.

Fractional CMO

Your senior marketing leader, part-time. Direction, team, agencies, budget and stack - shaped around what you need, for as long as you need it.

Interim Leadership

When the problem is the business, not just the marketing. Steady sales, operations and team, then hand back.

How pricing works: clear fees, agreed strategy

You're paying for senior thinking and leadership, not hours on a timesheet.

You're not paying for someone at a desk five days a week. You're paying for years of building, fixing and leading marketing - focused exactly where your business needs it. - AJ Scorey

Questions

What is a fractional CMO?

A senior marketing leader who works with you part-time, flexed to what your business needs. You get executive-level marketing experience without the cost of a full-time hire.

Who do you work with?

Mostly B2B SaaS and tech scale-ups, but I've led marketing across professional services, publishing, property and automotive. If you need senior marketing leadership, let's talk.

Will you do the work yourself?

Sometimes - I've done most marketing jobs at some point. But a senior leader making your ads is rarely good value. I'll make sure the right people do it, briefed properly and held to a high standard.

How does an engagement end?

When you need it to. Often that's when the foundations are in place and it's time to hire a permanent lead - and I'm happy to help find them. Some clients keep me on in a lighter advisory role.

How does pricing work?

It starts with a paid diagnostic. We then agree the strategy and a fixed fee for the work before we start, and review it together as things change.

What happens after I send my brief?

I read every brief myself. If it looks like a fit, we book a call to talk it through. If it does not, I will tell you honestly.
